i have this pet theory that the internet made way it easier to exit relationships.
that sounded v good at first, but actually it had many unforeseen downstream effects.
1. 30 years later, our social circles are all mediated by the internet, not local commons spaces.
2. so we dont pay the social cost of seeing around town a counterparty with whom we have conflict.
3. nor do we have a container for shared purpose or kinship where more sophisticated coordination, like arbitration or mediation can occur.
4. nor can we expect the local courts, previously the mediator of last resort, to mediate our disputes.
5. so when an exit occurs, there is no due process, no goodbye, no closure,
5. and we don't build the skills to repair after conflict.
6. instead, we just quietly recede into our bubbles where everyone who disagrees with us is outgrouped, they're evil, the're gaslighting us, quiet cancelation is the exit , buhbye. the people in the middle resigned to choosing sides or ducking & covering, instead of able to mediate.
7. it is kind of a big augmentation to the social fabric. its not all bad, the internet has brought a lot of good. its just not really what we were pitched in the 90s.
i think we were pitched this:
but actually what happened was that the costs stayed the same, theyre just expressed in different ways.
the internet gave us the ability to communicate with each other at scale, but it didnt give us the ability to have trust at scale.
bullish
1. trend reversal, i want to be bullish on trust again.
2. ethereum for giving us the ability to protocolize trust.
3. going outside, touching grass, doing stuff with neighbors, and building trust locally.
4. ethereum localism, for giving us a place to play with both containers at once.
