If you’re going to project into the future, do it earnestly and completely. Let’s build new systems, not worship the old ones.

In 1945, an economist named R.A. Radford published one of the strangest papers in Economica. Not theory. It was his diary of life inside a German prisoner-of-war camp. In there, national currencies meant nothing. Paper marks, francs, pounds - just scraps. The banks were gone. The markets were broken. Yet trade still happened. Every day. Everywhere. Because humans always find something to trade. Not gold. Not food. Cigarettes. They were perfect money: light enough to carry, divisible without waste, and instantly recognizable. Even non-smokers used them, because they knew smokers always would. A single cigarette could buy a loaf of bread. Ten could rent you a bed for the night. A carton was a savings account you could hold in your hands. No government planned this. No law enforced it. It emerged because it worked. And then, as quietly as it began, it ended. Supply chains returned, official currencies regained trust… and cigarettes went back to being just cigarettes. Currencies don’t vanish because someone bans them. They vanish when the real economy moves somewhere else. If the real economy of tomorrow belongs to AI systems...what will we trade?

The universe is a search engine for functional information. Starting from near-zero structure after the Big Bang, it bootstraps atoms → life → minds → technology, steadily compressing the most purpose-bearing patterns from a sea of randomness.

We ask when an AI becomes self-aware. But what if the universe is like a brain. Not just containing minds, but becoming one? Each entity a node in its neural network. I ask: what question is the computer running this simulation trying to answer?
